Planting in the pond
We are continuing with our Garden Design with the pond
itself. Our pond is a large natural pond, which has underground water
filling it up. With the heavy rain it was quite an effort to drain the
pond but with a large tubing already installed when the pond was
initially established, the water was able to be gradually drained out.
The old plants in the pond, i.e. the water lilies and the lotus were
dug out and divided into plantlets.
The plants are then planted in polybags and then placed in baskets.
These baskets are placed at the edge of the pond and secured by hooking
them to the bakau piles. In this way the plants can be maintained and
will not be propagating all over the pond.

Averrhoa bilimbi - Belimbing Buluh
Averrhoa bilimbi or locally called belimbing buluh is a
tropical fruit species. It is closely related to starfruits but it is
very different in its morphology, flowering and fruiting habits, fruit
flavour and uses. The plant is native to Indonesia but it is widely
distributed in tropical Asia and Latin America.
Belimbing buluh is a medium sized-tree, ca. 5-10 m height with upright
branching. The flowers are small, fragrant, yellow-green or purplish,
borne direct on old trunk and branches. The fruits are nearly
cylindrical, about 5-10 cm long, green and crispy when unripe, turning
to greenish-yellow to creamy and very juicy when ripe. The fruit is
very acidic and taste very sour.

Working in Gardens
When I received some pictures in my mail from a young friend
working in the Botanical gardens in Putrajaya, his impressions taken
through his Nikon 70 camera made me want to share with other people the
visions. It also made me realise how fortunate the young person is to
be working in the environment that stimulate his senses and obviously
give him great pleasure.
We decided to show other young people who are studying the basic
sciences that there are careers out there that will be able to bring
out the best in them.
Our young friend Cheong Weng Chun works as operations manager
with the event management company that manages the Taman Wetlands,
Putrajaya. His duties are visitors related and this would also include
managing events for groups of visitors to the Wetlands.

The Versatile Bamboo
The Bamboo is utilised in all Asian cultures, for daily
living use and in art and craft as well. The Japanese finds various use
for it in their life especially in culinary use, from chopsticks, mats
for rolling sushi to furniture making. In the Chinese culture we see
the same use in chopsticks, and in baskets for cooking dim sum. Both
cultures have bamboo shoots as an ingredient in food.
