Grafting For New Plants or Varieties

Cleft grafting is a method for converting unsuitable or outdated varieties of plants with new varieties, without having to go through the process of growing the tree from young. Major branches are sawed off the tree and reworked by insertion of scions of the newer varieties. It can also be used to top work trees for changing the cultivar of an established tree.

In cleft grafting, small scions are grafted onto a larger stock. The selected rootstock or tree to be topworked must first be cut back to the point at which the graft is to occur. The branch or trunk is sawed off at right angle. A heavy knife or sharp parang is used to split the rootstocks through the centre until a crack opens wide enough to place the scion.
