Types of Pruning

ImagePruning is a process that signals the plant to start rejuvenating, thus promoting new growth. Dr. Rusli of MINT have in Volume 11 touched a bit on Pruning of rose plants. Here we would like to continue our pruning series with attention paid to pruning rose plants. Roses flower on new shoots. If we don't prune the flowers will bloom higher and higher till eventually you canÕt see them!

In our 'temperate stations' like the Cameron Highlands or Fraser Hill, our rose plants will experience 'seasons'. The plants would then have 'dormant seasons' which are natural signals for the rose growers to schedule their pruning. Planting roses in our tropical lowland means that we do not really have dormant periods. This further means that we do not really have the luxury of the 'natural schedule' for pruning.

Potting up a Chilli plant

ImageChoose a suitable pot, either plastic or ceramic. Make sure there are enough drainage holes in the pot. Elevate the pot slightly using pot feet to improve drainage and to keep the plants well contained. Chillies need a well-drained soil mixture, with a loose, crumbly structure.

Use potting mixture formulated as 3 parts top-soil, 2 parts sand and 1 part well-rotted manure. Pot the chilli seedlings when the stems become woody (about 1-month old). Keep the seedlings well watered.

Chillies should be grown rapidly for best flavour - this is achieved with regular (usually twice daily watering) and regular applications of granule fertilizer (1 tablespoon/plant every fortnight). Use recommended fertilizers 15N:15P2O5:15K2O (Nitroposka green) for vegetative growth and 12N:12P2O5:17K2O:2MgO:TE (Nitroposka blue) for fruiting and maturity.

Small Arrangement

ImageFlower arrangements with flowers from the tropics brings to mind exotic and large arrangements that would give a "wow!" effect. These would come in large vases or bases as would normally be seen at hotel lobbies and even displayed prominently in homes. When it comes to small arrangements, the florists and homemakers tend to use the imported flowers from temperate countries or from the hill stations. Seldom are the flowers from the gardens picked for arrangements. Here we give you small arrangements with the delicate and small flowers from your very own tropical garden. Bring it into your lifestyle, a gardenasia lifestyle! An added advantage is that most of the delicate and small flowers are scented, so placing them on the tray when serving coffee or tea to your loved one or guest will definitely guarantee appreciation.
